Health

Is OtherKinds safe to consume?

Yes, absolutely!

OtherKinds is a food product, and we comply with all applicable EU food safety regulations. We work closely with our partners who have a long history of food production and work in certified facilities which adhere to the strictest hygiene and quality standards.

Furthermore, we have tested our products and we regularly do so for all types of contaminants (heavy metals, PFAS, PFOS, pesticides, etc.) and have found OtherKinds to be well within all EU safety boundaries. We continue to monitor this actively and closely.

Lastly, from a nutritional point of view, our Filter brew has no calories (just like coffee or tea) meaning you can enjoy it all day long. The A-OK latte's on the other hand are rich in Protein and fibre, making them a great addition to your daily diet.

Is OtherKinds suitable for pregnant & breastfeeding women?

OtherKinds naturally contains no caffeine and is made from natural ingredients making it a great solution for pregnant women.

Due to the natural caffeine content, it is often advised for women during pregnancy or while breastfeeding to limit their coffee intake to only ~2 cups per day. On top of that, other food products such as certain soft drinks can only contain caffeine. As such OtherKinds provides a way to enjoy your daily tea or coffee ritual without the downsides of caffeine.

As with any food product, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider if you have specific dietary concerns during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Is OtherKinds suitable for children?

OtherKinds contains no caffeine and is made from natural ingredients. It is perfectly safe for children to enjoy OtherKinds!

Especially the A-OK Latte variants have been described as drinks which also children can enjoy, since it's like healthier version of your typical chocolate drink when can be heavy in sugars.

As with any food product, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider if your child has any specific dietary concerns or needs.

Does OtherKinds contain Caffeine?

No! OtherKinds is made from roasted & fermented peas, and therefore naturally doesn't contain any caffeine.

We're not "decaf", there literally was "No Caf" ever involved.

This implies that even people with significant caffeine sensitivies or allergies are safe to consume OtherKinds.

Why not just drink Decaf Tea or Coffee?

You do you we always say. It's All OK really...!

However, the way we look at it, why add resources, utilities, emissions, to take out caffeine from a product when there's a tasty, naturally caffeine-free product available?

Secondly, typically, some residual caffeine remains, even in the best of decaf processes, which can be enough for people with a caffeine allergy.

Lastly, some decaffeination techniques, typically the very common process using chemical solvents, have come new scrutiny lately. Hence again, why decaf, when there's nocaf?

Will OtherKinds give me an energy boost?

Surprisingly, many people claim experiencing an energy boost after drinking OtherKinds.

We don't know whether this is your brain tricking you into believing you've had caffeine, or whether this is a different aspect of our product delivering this energy boost. We're investigating!

Our A-OK latte actually delivers naturally, sustained body energy, as it's high in protein and fibre.

Of course, it could also just be you feeling relaxed and good about yourself, surprisingly energising that...

How could OtherKinds help reduce/stop my caffeine habit?

As OtherKinds is without caffeine, we believe it's an invitation to have an OtherKinds in those moments where Caffeine isn't really needed or welcome. Say, in the afternoon as of 2PM, in the evening at dinner, or for instance when you're pregnant or suffering from heart conditions.

If you believe you truly have a problem with caffeine, OtherKinds could also help by maintaining your habit, but just slowly weening you of the caffeine part.

You could for instance make a filter batch by mixing OtherKinds and Coffee for a few days, and keep increasing the share of OtherKinds vs. Coffee. You could also swap 1 or 2 of your daily coffee or cups of tea for an OtherKinds. This way, yes, we can help you of the habit. However, it starts with your desire to change, and that's all OK...

Does OtherKinds contain allergens?

OtherKinds is made from Peas, which are part of the legume family. If you have a history of sensitivity to legumes, please consult your medical professional for advice.

OtherKinds is manufactured in a facility which processes gluten containing grains. At the moment, we pro-actively warn that trace amounts of gluten linked to barley might be present.

However, we take great care in cleaning our equipment as much as possible and roasting degrades most gluten. On top of that, any typical paper filter (for most filter machines) will block any gluten from passing through.

Full allergen information is always listed on the product packaging.

Is OtherKinds vegan?

OtherKinds is absolutely, 100% Vegan, as is coffee and tea.

Is OtherKinds gluten-free?

OtherKinds is manufactured in a facility which processes gluten containing grains. At the moment, we pro-actively warn that trace amounts of gluten due to Barley might be present.

However, we take great care in cleaning the equipment, and roasting degrades most gluten. Any typical paper filter (for most filter machines) will also not allow any gluten to pass through.

We are following this closely, and with future updates we might be able to guarantee our product to be gluten free.

Full allergen information is listed on the product packaging.

Does OtherKinds contain Acrylamide?

OtherKinds does contain low levels of acrylamide (~200-350 microgram / kg). This is below or similar to levels observed in most coffee. These are considered safe for human consumption.

This also represents a significant reduction versus some other hot drinks such as chicory based drinks which can be up to 9x higher than coffee's.

Acrylamide is a natural byproduct of the "maillard" reaction, one of the key flavour creating reactions in roasted coffee & tea. However, while it naturally occurs, it is a potential carcinogenic substance.

What is your pH? Do you have different acidity vs. coffee or tea?

OtherKinds has a pH value of around 6 when brewed correctly. This makes it much more neutral than most Coffee and Teas, which hover around a 5 on the PH scale.

OtherKinds, since it's made from pea, doesn't contain coffee or tea acids like chlorogenic acid or quinic acid.

Is OtherKinds suitable for people with acid reflux, GERD or IBS?

Coffee (and tea to a lesser extent) can have a significant impact on your gastric and intestinal system. This is linked to multiple reactions and compounds, including their relative acidity (pH of ~5).

Because OtherKinds is made from fermented & roasted peas, it lacks some of these critical components. As such, OtherKinds could be a way for you to enjoy your ritual, or start a ritual, without issues with acid refluc, GERD or IBS. In any case, we always recommend consulting your medical professional in case you would consider trying this long term.

Product & Ingredients

What is OtherKinds made from?

OtherKinds is made from roasted and fermented European peas. That’s it. No artificial flavours, no additives, no ingredients you’d need a chemistry degree to pronounce.

For our A-OK Latte variants, we've added in some roasted European St.John's Bread to deliver a bit of sweetness.

Where do you source your peas?

OtherKinds is made from roasted and fermented European peas.

We always aim to source the peas as close as possible to our manufacturing to limit transportation while maintaining quality.

Today that means our Yellow Peas are from the Netherlands or France.

How are Peas Grown?

Not only are peas an amazing product, but they are also an amazing crop for the soil.

Peas require little to no fertiliser, and generally don't require pesticides or herbicides. (even when not organic).

On top of that, peas bind nitrogen into the soil when they grow and by doing so can actually improve the yields (similar to fertiliser) of the next crop on the same soil.

Peas also have the option to sequester CO2 into the soil when combined with the right soil.

What is St. John's Bread?

St. John's bread is a common name for the edible fruit of the carob tree, native to the Mediterranean region and cultivated there for over 4000 years.

It is naturally sweet, with notes reminiscent of chocolate, caramel and malt.

In OtherKinds, we used the ground and roasted pods, not the seeds of the same plant, known as locust bean gum.

Where do you ferment OtherKinds?

We ferment our peas in a partner facility in the Netherlands.

Our partner is a family company, with a long history in food production and the strongest quality and taste credentials.

Where is OtherKinds made?

OtherKinds is fermented in the Netherlands, roasted & packaged in Belgium. Grown here, roasted here, enjoyed here.

How do I use OtherKinds?

Our Filter brew can be used just like Coffee. You can add ~8gr per cup (a heaping coffee spoon) to your filter and then pour-over or use your filter machine.

Our A-OK Latte can be added to any milk, and should be stirred / whisked / frothed into a suspended beverage. You can either enjoy it iced, with cold milk, or hot.

Feel free to first create a concentrate (like you would with Matcha powder) and only then add your hot/cold milk for a better end result.

Can OtherKinds be used for Cold-Brew?

Yes, technically you can, however take into account OtherKinds is not coffee and the filter ground is very fine.

Once we get more insights on ideal brewing time, temperature etc, we'll update this section.

Can OtherKinds be used for French Press?

We wouldn't recommend this. Our Filter Brew is very finely ground, which doesn't make it a good fit for a French Press application.

Should you want to use a french press in any case, we would recommend stirring more frequently than coffee, and ideally recommend a water temperature which doesn't exceed 90 degrees.

Can OtherKinds be used for Espresso?

We don't recommend it, and are working on a full bean product which you will be able to use for your espresso machine!

Why don't you sell roasted beans?

The beauty of OtherKinds is indeed that we start from the full pea, and maintain that pea throughout roasting.

However, physically, it behaves somewhat differently to a coffee bean. Hence, small adaptations to your machine are required, which we know most people would struggle with.

We are working on creating a variant that will forego with these adjustments, and allow you to just add our beans to your coffee machine and it'll work fine. Stay tuned!

What is the shelf life of the product?

You will find the best before date printed on the packaging. The product will be safe to consume afterwards, but we cannot guarantee the flavour profile.

Once opened, we recommend storing the product in a cool, dry place.

How should I store OtherKinds?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. After opening, reseal the packaging or transfer to an airtight container.

How sustainable is OtherKinds?

Very. Peas are a nitrogen-fixing crop, which means they actually improve the soil they grow in. Compared to conventional coffee, OtherKinds has up to 95% less CO₂, uses significantly less water and land, and travels a fraction of the distance.

Grown here, roasted here, enjoyed here.

What is your CO2 footprint, water use, and land use?

We are always adjusting and improving our sustainability numbers, which is part of why we exist.

Our current assessment leads us to believe 1 kg of Roasted OtherKinds represents 1.19 kg of CO2 equivalents.

We estimate the majority of our land use and water use is simply due to the cultivation of peas. Our processing is very efficient in this regard.

Is OtherKinds Fair Trade, Rainforest alliance certified or Regenerative?

We source from European farmers, which we pay a fair compensation for their efforts.

However, since we are purchasing our products and manufacturing in Europe, we can't actually receive certifications like Fair trade or Rainforest Alliance.

Peas are an amazing crop, and already contribute to soil health. However, we have an ambition to reach a fully regenerative sourcing in the coming years.

Does it taste like peas?

Not in the way you’re imagining. The roasting and fermentation process transforms the flavour entirely. What you get is smooth, nutty, and slightly crisp — warm and rounded, with no garden-pea vibes whatsoever. Most people are genuinely surprised.
